UAE- Father demands capital punishment for 'killer maid'

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The father of a baby girl, who was strangled to death allegedly by their housemaid on Friday, called for capital punishment for the latter on the day his child would have turned one

The Indian couple's plans to celebrate the joyous occasion of their "baby doll's" first birthday on Thursday has been shattered and fate has left them reeling under pain instead

"I still can't believe that lady could do this to our baby doll" But this is what has happened and I want her to get the maximum punishment. Such an evil soul doesn't deserve to live," the distraught father said on Thursday

He spoke to Khaleej Times on his way back from the Sikh Gurudwara after offering prayers for the soul of his daughter on her birthday, a day after she was cremated in a Hindu crematorium in Jebel Ali

According to the Dubai Police, the maid had strangled the child to death with her shawl as she wanted to go home on leave. However, the father denied reports that the maid was refused a vacation as his wife had started working recently

"My wife is yet to get her job visa and she has not started working. We had just started preparing the maid to handle the children alone and we both had gone out that day," he said

The maid, hailing from Darjeeling in India and holding a Nepalese passport, had been recruited through an agent in November

"Her mother died in December and she wanted to go back home. But, we couldn't send her then as her visa processing was still on and we told her to wait till we receive her visa stamped. Later, she had changed her mind and said she would continue.

He said there was no reason for the maid to harbour any hatred towards them as they treated her like a family member

"When she was unwell after her mother's death, my wife looked after her, cooked for her and took her to the doctor. My wife also got her a gift on her birthday on January 16.

He said the couple had left home around 2pm on the day the incident. "We were in Bur Dubai when her call came shortly after 6pm. The way she described how unwell our baby was made us panic as she was perfectly fine when we left her.

The couple requested the child's aunt who lives in Al Nahda to rush to their home in Al Muhaisnah as she could reach there faster than them. However, the baby had breathed her last before she was rushed to a nearby private hospital by her aunt

"The police said she might have done the crime some hours back, probably soon after we left home. She had kept our four-year-old son in the hall, leaving the TV on for him and taken the baby to the bedroom.

He said the family had defended the maid when she was initially interrogated by the police

"We thought she will be very upset if we accuse her like that because she was like a mother to our child and sister to us. We still feel that we are seeing a nightmare"and hope that we will see our baby's smiling face when we wake up late.
