Saudi - Street peddlers face stringent health, safety regulations

(MENAFN - Arab News) Jeddah Municipality has announced several new rules for street peddlers to ensure they operate in a safe and hygienic manner. Abdul Aziz Al-Ghamdi, director of information at the municipality, said Saudis have started applying for fixed and mobile kiosks under the new regulations. The ministry would grant licenses to those who meet the new criteria, he said. He said street peddlers must conform to the requirements outlined by the city, especially during peak commercial seasons, including public holidays, and Umrah and Haj periods. They must stick to allocated areas, have vehicles linked to mobile carts, fridges to store food, and have containers that meet technical and health requirements. Those selling fruit, vegetables and light snacks would have to conform to the country's competition laws. Carts would not be allowed to stand next to schools, houses, dirt roads, garbage containers, or in residential areas. The municipality would punish violators, said Al-Ghamdi.
